Nigeria… a world of opportunities

P1030593

The country Nigeria is associated only with oil, fight, killing… and its only these bad things come to mind (at least that's what came to my mind when I heard about Tolaram and a chance to go to Nigeria). But after landing here I got a different perspective altogether. The people are very happy, friendly, warm and kind. Did you know that they are the happiest people on earth! No doubt the country is ransacked, even by the government but the people here live with a hope that things will turn around and for the better. Almost 80% of the revenues coming from oil go to the government and it has done little to improve the livelihood of the people.

If you look closer at it, Nigeria itself is three countries by demography and two by religion. The main religions are Christians and Muslims, and since this country is primarily import driven the cost of living is on the higher side. The expats should go around with caution as some see them as moving banks! One of my friend told me that he was robbed at gun point and when he went the next day to the police station to complain, he saw the same there as a cop!!! But the good news is that they don't hurt you if you jus give them what you have.

Then where are the opportunities? With high risk comes a high return. Majority business here is NOT matured and there is a lot of scope for growth. There is also room for mistakes unlike country like India. The government is planning a lot to ensure that Nigeria is on top 20 Nations by 2020, and there are some steps taken towards the fulfilment of it. All in all the next phase of growth will be seen in developing and underdeveloped country, so pack your backs and see you in Nigeria
